Orange River
I was lucky enough to get invited to a trip down the Orange River for the Worker's day long weekend. What an amazing experience! I went down with an awesome group which was made up of 6 guys, most of whom were school mates, and 4 girls. We went with the Felix Unite group, guided coincidentally by schoolmate a year behind us, Rory Mcreedie.
All meals were catered for by Felix. There were at least 20 in the group and they did a fantastic job providing snacks and full on meals. We went down the river in Mohawks. These are 2-man, fibreglass canoes. The water was fairly low, which made for a bumpy ride on occasions, but was still high enough for us to do the entire trip without skipping any sections.
We spent one night at base camp and three on the river. We slept the two nights in tents as it was fairly chilly in the evening, but were able to sleep outside the following two nights. The temperature was mid to high 20's during the day, which made for perfect conditions.
Special mention goes to:
Team Lowrider (Andrew and Dave) - Not sure how the 2 largest lads managed to get into the same canoe.
Orange River Swimming Team (Paul and Amy) - Who capsized not only on rapids but on the flats as well.
Team Titanic/Yellow Submarine (Sarah and your's truly) - Could I have asked for a cooler boat mate? I think not. Provider of applies, coke, constant entertainment - I think those screams are still echoing down the canyon - and an excellent sponge/water wall.
Katrin and Jaco - You have to have something pretty special going to allow your gf to put out an umbrella and stretch out in the front of the boat whilst you slave away in the back.
Erik and Marcelle - Proof that opposites attract? The innocent maiden the evil ringleader! Also the life of the party :>
